Join Staff

The USJ recruits staff members annually during the beginning of fall quarter.

Why apply?

Gain valuable experience by actively engage in the scientific review process. Many students do not have the opportunity to engage with the other side of the publication process until obtaining their doctoral degrees. Furthermore, by carefully reviewing and editing a variety of articles, you will gain in-depth exposure to scientific articles both within and outside of their chosen field of study.

You will also receive upper division course credit for your participation as a USJ staff member.

Who should apply?

Staff members of all years are welcome to apply. We recruit staff for all majors. However, STEM majors are given preference for the Review Board. Previous experience with publications, graphic design, leadership, or research will also be considered.

USJ Staff Structure

The USJ is divided into three boards: Review, Editorial, and Layout. Each board is led by a Managing Editor (ME), and consists of Assisting Managing Editorials (AMEs) and general board members. The Leadership Team consists of the Editors-in-Chief (EICs), each of the MEs, and the Webmaster.

Review

Decides which articles are chosen to be published through a rigorous review process, reads science critically.

The Review Board is active from Fall Week 7 to Winter Week 5.

Editorial

Performs edits on articles to ensure organization and flow, making articles accessible, clear, and high quality.

The Editorial Board is active from Winter Week 3 to Spring Week 1.

Layout

Creative team that designs how the journal looks, from the cover to the placement of figures.

​

The Layout Board is active from Winter Week 1 to Spring Week 6.
